a wonderful tour. I loved it!!
My wife and I begin this private tour with Bruno, our very skilled driver from the excellent tour company Gregtours. Bruno retrieved us from our hotel and drove us to meet Erik who gave us the guided tour of Rocinha. Bruno is a master driver as he skillfully navigated through the very busy and steep roads leading to the highest point of Rocinha in which we began our walking tour. Upon arriving at the highest point we made contact with little arm who is the well known all over that city. Erik introduced us to Little Arm who greeted us in his own way and we provided Little Arm with a small token of our appreciation ( a banana as little arm is the town’s small little monkey) we said our goodbye to Little Arm and Erik began loading us with information about the largest known Favela in Rio. My wife and I hint Erik with a load of questions and he answered each and everyone of them in great detail. Because Erik is also an English teacher and knows a lot about the United States, we were able to compare and contrast life in Rocinha to various cities in the United States as my wife and I live in the US.
The tour was awesome, safe and well structured. I labeled this review as the Mystery of the Rocinha tour as what appears on the tour may not be what it seems and one must experience the tour, observe the people and ask the right questions. We loaded Erik with questions as were we amazed at what we were seeing. We learned that the folks at the highest point of the Rocinha live a little bit differently than the ones further down the mountain. We were taken through small alleys and various shorts cuts to reach the bottom of the hill while gaining knowledge of the people and areas were we passing through. IT WAS AWESOME!!
My wife is a hard person to please and even she did not want the tour to end. She was very engaged and loaded Erik with questions. Once we got to the bottom of the hill we entered into my wife’s favorite activity ( shopping). Erik went from tour guide to translator as he begin helping us negotiate with the local merchants as we don’t speak Portuguese and Erik speaks perfect English.
Erik escorted us back to Bruno who drove us back to our hotel. Before reaching back to our hotel, Bruno briefly stopped by the city called LeBlon which has the most scenic view of the ocean and small eating areas with awesome food ( my wife and I returned later of lunch)
We were given contact numbers and advised if we needed anything while still in Rio give them a call and they would assist.
