What To Expect

It houses the modernist Roman Catholic Archdiocese of So Sebastio do Rio de Janeiro and is committed to Saint Sebastian, the city's patron saint. The cathedral, designed by Edgar de Oliveira da Fonseca in a modern style based on the Mayan style architecture of pyramids, was built between 1964 and 1979 and overtaken a set of churches that had served as cathedrals since 1676 as the seat of the Archdiocese. The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel of the Ancient Sea, now known as the Old Cathedral, was constructed in the 18th century, it was assigned as Rio's cathedral in the early 19th century.

Escadaria Selaron
The Escadaria Selarón, also known as Selaron. Steps is a set of world-famous steps in Brazil. They are the work of Chilean-born artist Jorge Selaron and are made of colorful ceramic tile and stand 215 meters long which are covered in over 2000 tiles collected from over 60 countries around the world.
