This is the imperial city and Emporer Pedro 2 and Theresa ruled from here ! On the scenic drive (1 hr) up the mountains Flavio explained the rich history of Brazil and the imperial family. It is a very nice drive with many picturesque overlooks. After visiting the former casino (huge bavarian style building) Flavio led us personally through the imperial museum and explained all the important exhibits. So much better than just reading place cards.
We then saw the main cathedral de alcantara where the royal family is buried which is excellent gothic architecture and walked through the area seeing the different historic homes and parks. Petropolis is a city made for strolling.
A complete surprise and to me one of the best reasons to see Petropolis was to visit the Santos Dumont home and learn about his life- he was actually the father of aviation (not the Wright Brothers!) and its a fascinating tour through his home.
We had a buffet lunch at a very nice restaurant and saw the crystal palace -
Flavio was passionate about sharing his knowledge and life experiences in Brazil with us - this made the tour so much more enjoyable and the fact that it was a private tour made it more personable.

Flavio was very professional and knowledgeable. He picked us up on time at the cruise ship pier and made recommendations about other things to see and do in Rio, even though we had not booked additional tours with him. His English is excellent, he is friendly and an experienced guide. Highly recommended.
